Incorporating Perennial Edibles with Orchids in My Garden

I'm exploring the integration of perennial edible plants with my collection of rare orchids within a permaculture framework. Currently, my garden features many well-established orchids, but I'm hesitant to disturb their roots when planting edibles. I’m located in Northern California, where I have access to a variety of perennial herbs and vegetables. I've attempted to place some herbs around the orchids, but I worry about competing for resources. How can I successfully incorporate perennial edibles without harming my orchids? Are there specific plants that work well together, and what strategies should I follow to minimize disturbance to my orchids while still promoting a permaculture approach?
