How often should I water my ferns in this dry climate?

I'm located in a semi-arid region, and I’ve been a bit confused about the watering needs of my indoor ferns. I started with a couple of Boston ferns in my living room, and they seem to dry out really fast. I've been experimenting with a watering schedule, but sometimes they look too droopy, and other times, the soil feels a bit soggy. My experience with vegetables and herbs has me a bit more focused on soil moisture, but ferns seem to be a different beast! Can anyone help me determine a good routine for watering so they thrive, rather than just survive?
