How can I tell if my compost tumbler is cooking properly?

Hi everyone! I'm getting into composting with my tumbler, and I want to make sure it's doing its job properly. I live in Chicago, and the weather can be a bit unpredictable, which makes me wonder if my compost is actually breaking down as it should. I've been turning it regularly and keeping an eye on the moisture, but I’m not entirely sure what signs I should be looking for to know if the compost is 'cooking.' Are there specific smells or textures I should watch out for? I want to make the most out of my composting efforts, so any tips on how to assess the activity in my tumbler would be fantastic!
