Key practical differences:

Temperature control: Bins retain heat better, speeding up decomposition. Piles need to be much larger (at least 3x3x3 feet) to generate similar heat.
Turning ease: Tumbler-style bins make turning easy. Piles require more physical effort with a pitchfork.
Aesthetics: Bins are more neighbor-friendly and comply with HOA rules in most areas.
Pest access: Bins with lids keep raccoons, dogs, and rodents out. Piles are open buffets.

Which to choose?
If you have limited space, want faster results, or live in a neighborhood, get a bin. If you have acreage, generate large volumes of yard waste, and don\'t mind the wait, a pile works fine and costs nothing.
Both produce the same end product - nutrient-rich compost for your garden.
