How can I effectively use organic mulch for my citrus trees?

I'm currently growing several citrus trees on my balcony in Paris, and I'm really focused on organic gardening techniques. I've been experimenting with different types of mulch, such as straw and shredded leaves, to suppress weeds and retain moisture in the soil. My concern is whether certain organic materials might attract pests or create an unwanted atmosphere for diseases, especially since citrus can be sensitive. My garden is fairly sunny but can get a bit humid, especially during the summer months. Can anyone share their experiences or recommendations on the best organic mulch for citrus trees that will help enhance soil health without compromising the plants? I'm particularly interested in how often I should replenish the mulch and if there’s a preferred thickness for optimal benefits.
