How long do organic seeds last before they go bad?

I've got a collection of organic seeds that I saved from last year's harvest, but I'm not sure how long they're viable. I usually store them in a cool, dark place, but I've heard varying things about their shelf life. My garden setup is pretty small, and I want to make the most out of what I've saved. I've tried germinating a few of them recently, and some sprouted while others didn't, which makes me wonder if they're just old. Can someone shed some light on how to test seed viability, and how long I can expect my organic seeds to last? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Great to see you diving into the world of seed saving! It’s a fantastic way to keep your garden going while also saving a few bucks.

So, to answer your question about organic seeds: generally, most seeds can last anywhere from 1 to 5 years, depending on the type. For example, carrot and onion seeds usually have a shorter shelf life (around 1-2 years), while things like beans and peas can last up to 3-4 years. Tomato and pepper seeds fall somewhere in the middle, usually good for about 4-5 years if stored properly.

Since you mentioned that some of your seeds sprouted while others didn't, it’s a good idea to test the viability of the ones you're unsure about. Here’s a simple way to do that:

1. **Take 10 seeds** from the pack you want to test.
2. **Moisten a paper towel** and place the seeds on one half of it, then fold it over.
3. **Put it in a ziplock bag** or a small container to keep humidity in.
4. **Keep it in a warm, dark place**. Check back in about a week or two.

Count how many seeds sprouted. If you get 7-8 out of 10, you’re in good shape! If you get less than half, you might want to reconsider using those seeds this season.

And kudos on storing them in a cool, dark place—that's key! Just remember to keep them in an airtight container to prevent moisture from sneaking in, which can spoil them.

Happy gardening, and I hope you find a nice batch of viable seeds in your stash! 🌱
