Best soil amendments for a fall vegetable garden?

I'm currently preparing my soil for the upcoming fall vegetable planting, and I want to make sure it’s at its best! Over the years, I've learned the importance of soil health, and I’ve been using compost and organic fertilizers. However, I'm not entirely sure what specific amendments work best for fall crops, especially since I'm targeting heirloom varieties. My garden is located in a climate where temperatures can dip quite quickly in the fall, which affects soil temperature and nutrient availability. I’m considering adding some leaf mold or other organic matter to enhance moisture retention and nutrients. Can anyone share their experiences or recommendations for soil amendments that have worked wonders for their fall vegetable gardens? I’d love to optimize this aspect!
